Arsenal Player Ratings: Tzolis 9, Saka 8, Ødegaard 8, shines as champions crush Coventry
Christos Tzolis was Arsenal’s standout performer as the Premier League champions began their title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry. The Evening Standard rated the summer signing 9/10 after an electric display that saw him contribute directly to Arsenal’s first two goals.
Arsenal Player Ratings vs Coventry City
David Raya — 7/10
Raya enjoyed a relatively quiet night as Coventry struggled to create clear openings. When called upon, he handled the situation comfortably and remained composed in possession. His distribution also helped Arsenal maintain their control.
Ben White — 8/10
White was one of Arsenal’s most useful outlets from the back. He consistently moved forward to support Saka and found dangerous positions between Coventry’s defensive lines. His involvement in the move for Odegaard’s goal highlighted his attacking intelligence.
Cristhian Mosquera — 7/10
Mosquera produced a composed performance in central defence. He was strong in challenges and generally dealt well with Coventry’s attacking threat. With competition for places increasing, this was a useful performance from the defender.
Gabriel Magalhaes — 6/10
Gabriel had little trouble keeping Coventry away from Arsenal’s goal, although he was less convincing in some physical battles. He picked up a booking and endured a few awkward moments, but the overall defensive structure remained solid.
Riccardo Calafiori — 7/10
Calafiori made a major contribution to Arsenal’s fast start by providing the delivery for Havertz’s opener. His willingness to push forward and drift inside created additional problems for Coventry and opened space for Tzolis on the flank.
Declan Rice — 8/10
Rice looked refreshed and energetic in midfield. His powerful running helped Arsenal break through Coventry’s structure, while his passing kept the champions moving forward. He also came close to scoring before the interval.
Myles Lewis-Skelly — 7/10
Lewis-Skelly once again showed maturity beyond his years. He was confident receiving the ball under pressure and repeatedly carried it into advanced areas. Coventry’s players struggled to contain his movement and were forced into several fouls.
Martin Odegaard — 8/10
The captain was influential in Arsenal’s attacking construction and rewarded himself with the third goal. His finish was untidy, but his overall contribution was far more polished as he combined effectively with Saka and White.
Bukayo Saka — 8/10
Saka gave Arsenal supporters plenty of encouragement with a lively display. He was alert to score the second goal and repeatedly found ways through Coventry’s defensive setup. His combination play on the right was particularly effective.
Christos Tzolis — 9/10
The standout performer. Tzolis brought pace, aggression and creativity to Arsenal’s left side and constantly forced Coventry backwards. His pressing helped Arsenal win possession for the opening goal, while his involvement in the second underlined his influence. It was an excellent Premier League debut.
Kai Havertz — 7/10
Havertz produced an excellent finish to give Arsenal the lead and showed good movement around the attacking areas. He linked with his teammates effectively, although his influence became less prominent as the match progressed.
Substitutes
Martin Zubimendi — 7/10
Zubimendi entered the game and immediately helped Arsenal keep possession. His passing was crisp and purposeful, with the midfielder showing a clear preference for moving the ball forward.
Noni Madueke — 6/10
Madueke offered energy after coming on but struggled to find the final pass that would have created another clear opportunity. His cameo was useful without being decisive.
Eberechi Eze — 6/10
Eze showed flashes of his ability to carry the ball through central areas but had limited time to influence proceedings. He will have more opportunities to make his mark as the campaign develops.
Mikel Merino — 7/10
Merino made a positive return and nearly added another goal late in the contest. His introduction helped Arsenal retain control while offering additional physical presence in midfield.
Piero Hincapie — N/A
Hincapie arrived in the closing stages and was given too little time to make a meaningful contribution, making a rating difficult to justify.
