Australian lawmaker Helen Haines loses leg after deliberate car attack
Australian lawmaker Helen Haines has reportedly lost a leg after a man deliberately struck her twice with a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria.
According to New York Post, the independent parliamentarian underwent surgery overnight following Monday’s attack and remains in critical condition.
Australian media reported that doctors were working to save her other leg.
A 43-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and harming a public official.
Police are investigating the incident alongside counter-terrorism authorities.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, saying, “It’s clear that there was a deliberate act here. This wasn’t an accident, someone just skidding off the road.”
Witnesses said the attacker reversed his vehicle and struck Haines again before a bystander intervened.
Albanese also expressed concern about increasing political hostility, urging Australians to engage respectfully and reduce tensions nationwide.
