Police reportedly fired tear gas at protesters, including governorship candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), during a gathering at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos.

According to Peoples Gazette, the incident occurred during activities marking the anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, which drew nationwide attention to allegations of police brutality in Nigeria.

The gathering, organised by the Enough is Enough Movement, was intended to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, protests against police brutality.

Among those affected were ADC governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and NDC candidate Funso Doherty, alongside journalists and other participants.

Officers reportedly dispersed attendees and prevented them from laying wreaths at the toll gate in remembrance of victims.

The 2020 demonstrations demanded the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, widely accused of human rights abuses.

The newspaper reported that Lagos police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
