Family demands investigation into man’s death in Osun police custody
The family of Taofiki Mustapha, who died in police custody in Osun State, has demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to The PUNCH, Mustapha, a father of seven, was found dead inside a cell at Agbeye Police Post after being accused of stealing cocoa pods.
In a petition to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone XI, the family alleged that Mustapha was beaten before being handed over to police officers.
The petition stated, “Our clients state that investigation is yet to confirm that the deceased truly stole the cocoa pods.”
Police spokesperson Olanrewaju Ojedele confirmed that two suspects, including the community’s monarch, had been questioned and released.
He said Mustapha was beaten, paraded half-naked and filmed before being taken into custody on October 5.
Ojedele added that an autopsy had been conducted at Osun State University Teaching Hospital, with investigators awaiting the results to establish the cause of death.
