Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence poses a severe threat to jobs and human life, urging that the risks become a global priority, according to The New York Times.

In an interview and a lengthy essay published Wednesday, Gates argued the tech industry privately acknowledges AI’s dangers but downplays them publicly over financial incentives. He said this era of technological change differs fundamentally from past disruptions, warning mass job losses are likely without intervention.

Gates proposed a “token tax” on AI use to fund displaced workers and called for international agreements restricting AI-enabled bioweapon risks.
