Boat capsizes in Sokoto, leaves 47 dead
Forty-seven people died Thursday when a boat capsized on a river in Sokoto State, Nigeria, according to the Vanguard. The boat was carrying farm workers to Gorau town in the Goronyo local government area when it overturned. Abdulkadir Yusuf, Sokoto state manager at the National Inland Waterways Authority, confirmed the toll “so far.”
Resident Samaila Garba, 55, said his 13-year-old granddaughter was among the dead, most of whom were women and children traveling to farms during rainy season. Another resident, Aminu Dan Hajiya, said nearly every household in the community had been affected by the tragedy.
