Canada announces fresh tariffs on US goods as trade tensions escalate

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 per cent on about 700 US products, escalating the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

CNN reported that the tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 per cent, will take effect on September 8 and target products including steel, aluminium, seafood, appliances, paper products and agricultural goods.

Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the measures were strategically selected to put political pressure on specific US states ahead of the midterm elections.

Canada also announced a C$7.5 billion support package for businesses affected by the tariffs, while further retaliation remains possible if Washington escalates the dispute.
