Canada border agency reviews papers of international students protesting work permit refusals
Canada Border Services Agency officers stormed an international students’ protest venue in Calgary to check immigration papers, according to a report by Peoples Gazette. Many protesters, demanding post-graduation work permits after visa expiration, were reportedly issued “notices to appear” to determine their eligibility to remain in Canada.
The protest follows a hunger strike by students affected by IRCC’s rejection of about 480 Portage College partner-program graduates’ work permit applications, classified as “non-credit.” IRCC spokesperson Matthew Krupovich said the agency remains committed to adjudicating applications fairly under Canadian immigration law.
