Canada pushes to become ‘Associate Member’ of EU…
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is pursuing an ambitious plan to deepen Canada’s ties with the European Union, seeking “associate member” status as trade talks with the United States collapse, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The push follows a period of severe trade tension between Canada and the US, described as the worst bilateral trade dispute in modern history between the two countries. Carney reportedly held a call with senior European leaders and has spent months in private discussions with heads of state across France, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia, alongside some European royals, exploring ways to more closely integrate Canada’s economy with the EU’s 27-nation bloc.
