Captured US underwater drone gives Iran chance to reverse-engineer American tech
Iran seizes US Navy submersible; Pentagon says it had “malfunctioned”
Iran’s capture of a U.S. military underwater drone gives Tehran an opportunity to study and potentially reverse-engineer the vessel, delivering a setback for the Pentagon and drone maker Anduril, according to a report by Reuters.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they seized the Anduril-built Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has downplayed the incident, saying the drone was an older, defective model that had malfunctioned more than a day before Iran’s announcement and carried no classified sonar or radar equipment.
According to Reuters, analysts believe Iran is unlikely to gain a decisive military advantage from the drone, but the episode nonetheless represents a propaganda win for Tehran and an awkward setback for Washington’s efforts to project technological superiority, with Iranian embassies mocking the U.S. online over the loss.
