Israel’s fingerprints are all over the evolution of the iPhone, through to the Apple Duo revealed today. Many people have no idea how deeply Israeli technology and engineering have contributed to Apple’s products. Apple acquired several Israeli technology companies and built major R&D operations in Herzliya and Haifa, particularly around semiconductors, imaging, sensing and storage. Among the Israeli connections spanning iphone generations:
PrimeSense: Israeli 3D-sensing pioneer acquired by Apple in 2013. Its technology and engineers helped build Apple’s capabilities in depth sensing and the technologies associated with TrueDepth and Face ID.
Anobit: Israeli flash-memory company acquired by Apple in 2012. Its expertise became important to Apple’s storage architecture. Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji has said that Apple storage controllers are developed in Israel.
LinX Computational Imaging: Israeli camera startup acquired in 2015. It specialized in miniature multi-camera systems and computational photography, technologies that became increasingly important as iPhone cameras evolved.
RealFace: Israeli facial-recognition and AI company acquired in 2017, adding Israeli computer-vision expertise to Apple.
LiDAR and depth sensing: Apple’s Israeli engineering teams have played important roles in the sensing technologies used to map depth and space.
Cinematic Mode: Apple has also credited its Israeli R&D operation with technology contributing to the sophisticated imaging and depth capabilities behind features such as Cinematic Mode.
Apple silicon: Israel has become one of Apple’s important semiconductor R&D centers, with engineers working on custom silicon and hardware technologies used across Apple products. This is bigger than a handful of acquisitions. Apple took Israeli startups, engineers and technologies and built a major long-term R&D presence in Israel focused on some of the hardest problems in mobile technology: chips, cameras, sensing, storage and communications. You may never see “Made in Israel” printed on an iPhone. But Israeli innovation has helped make the iPhone what it is today
