Champions League introduces new rules for 2026/27 season
UEFA has introduced several rule changes ahead of the 2026/27 Champions League, with new measures targeting time-wasting, VAR decisions and yellow-card suspensions. According to Sports Mole, the changes will apply as the 36-team league phase gets underway this week.
1. Faster substitutions: Players being replaced must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. Failure to do so could delay the incoming player for up to a minute.
2. Quicker restarts: Referees can give players a five-second countdown to take throw-ins and goal kicks. Missing the deadline can result in the throw-in being awarded to the opposition, while a delayed goal kick can lead to a corner for the other team.
3. Medical treatment: Players who receive treatment generally have to remain off the pitch for one minute before returning. Goalkeepers are exempt, alongside certain situations involving serious fouls.
4. Expanded VAR powers: VAR can correct mistaken identity and intervene over an incorrectly awarded second yellow card. It can also review attacking fouls before corners or free-kicks and certain handball situations.
5. Yellow-card threshold: Players will now be suspended after four accumulated yellow cards instead of three, with further bans coming at six, eight and 10 cautions.
6. Covering the mouth: UEFA will not automatically send off players for covering their mouths, although referees can issue yellow cards for unsporting behaviour.
