Chelsea fans could turn against Alonso over Estevao treatment
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been warned that his treatment of Brazilian youngster Estevao could turn supporters against him if the winger continues to struggle for playing opportunities.
The 19-year-old was an unused substitute as the Blues suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, despite Cole Palmer’s absence through suspension.
According to talkSPORT, Estevao has played just 148 minutes of competitive football under Alonso and is yet to start a Premier League match this season.
Former Premier League players Jamie O’Hara and Jermaine Pennant have questioned the manager’s decision-making, warning that the situation could become a major problem if results deteriorate.
O’Hara said: “That’s a bad situation there for Chelsea, because I genuinely think he is a star in the making.
“Pennant added: “That could be one of the Achilles’ heels for Alonso, if he does not start using him.”
Responding to the situation, Xabi Alonso acknowledged the youngster’s frustration, saying: “I’m sure that Estevao will have his moment. It’s my responsibility and we need to deal with that.”
The Brazilian scored six goals in 33 appearances during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.
