Chelsea injury blow confirmed as winger withdraws from international duty

Chelsea have suffered an injury setback with winger Jamie Gittens withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad after suffering an ankle problem. Gittens was substituted in the 39th minute of England’s 4-2 Euro U21 qualifying victory over Kazakhstan after taking a kick to the ankle.

According to the Evening Standard, England boss Lee Carsley confirmed the 22-year-old would return to Chelsea for further tests rather than risk aggravating the injury. The Football Association subsequently confirmed Gittens had withdrawn from the squad alongside Norwich City duo Kellen Fisher and Ben Chrisene.

Chelsea’s medical team will now assess the winger to determine the severity of the injury and his recovery timeline. Gittens has had limited opportunities this season, featuring only in Carabao Cup victories over Luton and Leeds after Chelsea rejected summer interest from Roma.
