Public servants reaffirm October 2 warning strike over fuel price, wage award

Public servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have reaffirmed their September 30, 2026, ultimatum to the Federal Government over petrol prices, wage awards and negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

According to PUNCH, the council, comprising eight public sector unions, warned that its members would embark on a three-day nationwide warning strike from October 2 if the government failed to meet its demands.

The unions are demanding that petrol prices be reduced to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award and negotiations for a minimum wage of at least N500,000 from 2027.

The council said it had mobilised workers nationwide ahead of the proposed action.

The JNPSNC had written to President Bola Tinubu on September 21, outlining its demands and urging urgent intervention to address the economic hardship confronting workers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 29, the council warned that failure to address the fuel price and wage award demands by September 30 would trigger the strike.

It said the action would commence on October 2, 2026, if the Federal Government failed to respond satisfactorily to its demands.
