China also fears AI doomsday but prioritises catching up with U.S
China has acknowledged concerns that artificial intelligence could pose catastrophic risks while making clear that closing the technology gap with the United States remains a priority.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a senior Chinese official said Sunday that AI had become the “core engine of a new round of technological revolution” and the main battleground in Beijing’s technological competition with Washington.
The remarks highlight China’s balancing act as governments worldwide debate whether increasingly powerful AI systems could eventually threaten humanity.
While American technology leaders and researchers have issued increasingly stark warnings about advanced AI, Beijing is focusing heavily on strengthening its domestic capabilities.
China is racing to develop competitive AI models, computing infrastructure and technologies as rivalry with the United States intensifies.
