China fires back at Anthropic CEO over call to curb its AI development
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday hit back at Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for the US to curb China’s artificial intelligence capabilities, according to a report by ABC News.
Amodei, in an essay published Saturday, warned that a “Chinese lead in AI would pose grave danger” and urged continued restrictions on chip sales to China. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded that “fearmongering, confrontation and vicious competition” would not serve global AI governance. President Donald Trump downplayed calls to slow AI development, insisting the US was leading China.
China’s Global Times dismissed Amodei’s essay as a “Cold War playbook” targeting China, while Beijing’s Commerce Ministry rejected US claims that Chinese firms were improperly “distilling” American AI models.
