Christa Pike is conscious and speaking…
Christa Pike is conscious and speaking nearly a week after a botched execution left her critically injured and temporarily on a ventilator, her attorneys said on Tuesday, ABC News reports.
“Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” her attorneys — Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the Tennessee Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee — said in a statement.
Pike, 50, continues to receive medical care after surviving two lethal doses of pentobarbital during her failed September 30 execution in Nashville, and remains handcuffed to her hospital bed with “severe damage” to her arms, her attorneys said.
Tennessee has since launched an independent review into the botched execution, with former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton tapped to investigate the state’s Department of Corrections.
Her attorneys expressed gratitude to the first responders and medical team who treated Pike, as well as the thousands of people worldwide who sent messages of prayer and support.
The case remains a developing story, with updates expected as Pike’s recovery and the state’s review continue.
