‘Don’t turn us into content’ — IGP Disu urges restraint from Nigerians recording police
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has asked Nigerians to exercise restraint when recording police officers on duty, according to TheCable. Disu spoke on Tuesday when Nigerian Bar Association president Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya and members of its executive committee visited him at force headquarters in Abuja. He said officers were “jolted” by a court ruling permitting citizens to record police during stop-and-search operations, adding that Nigerians had since begun recording officers everywhere, including in restaurants, which he described as demoralising.
Disu said officers needed full concentration to perform difficult and dangerous duties. He clarified that citizens retained the right to record officers in public but urged them not to turn police work into content for skits. The March ruling, delivered by Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa in Delta State, followed a suit filed by lawyer Maxwell Nosakhare Uwaifo.
