Ebola in Nigeria: Five safety measures to prevent infection
Following Nigeria’s confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja, health authorities have urged Nigerians to adopt preventive measures to reduce transmission risks.
According to Peoples Gazette, Health Minister Ali Pate announced Tuesday that an infected traveller had been isolated, with 44 contacts identified for monitoring.
Here are five recommended precautions:
1. Avoid travel to Ebola epicentres
Avoid nonessential travel to areas experiencing confirmed Ebola outbreaks and follow official health advisories.
2. Avoid contact with infected patients
Avoid direct contact with infected individuals, particularly their blood and bodily fluids, as recommended by WHO.
3. Reduce consumption of wildlife
Avoid handling sick wildlife or consuming raw meat from animals potentially carrying Ebola.
4. Practise good hand hygiene
Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitiser when necessary.
5. Seek early medical treatment
Anyone experiencing symptoms after possible exposure should contact health authorities immediately and avoid close contact with others.
Early detection and contact tracing remain essential for containing potential outbreaks.
