EFCC boss: I have case files full of Pastors, Imams over financial crimes

EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede has raised concern over the number of pastors, imams and other religious leaders being investigated and prosecuted for alleged financial crimes.

Speaking at the 2026 Second Council Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in Abuja, Olukoyede said the commission’s case files contained several religious figures accused of financial offences, with some already convicted and serving prison sentences.

According to Tribune, he questioned whether religious titles should continue to be attached to individuals facing criminal allegations, urging society to judge religious leaders by their conduct rather than their titles.

“I have my case files full of these titles,” Olukoyede said, noting that some convicted suspects continued to be addressed as pastors or imams while in prison.

The EFCC chairman warned religious leaders that their positions would not shield them from prosecution if they became involved in financial crimes.

“So if you think you’re a Christian or you’re a pastor here, and you commit financial crime, I will be your enemy. I won’t be your friend,” he said.
