Fani-Kayode challenges Sheikh Jingir’s claim that Muslims outnumber Christians in Nigeria
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has taken direct aim at a viral claim by Plateau-based Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Jingir that Muslims outnumber Christians in Nigeria, describing the remarks as extreme, dangerous and false.
Writing on his verified X account Sunday, August 9, Fani-Kayode was emphatic: “Nigeria is NOT a Muslim country and neither is she a Christian country. She is a SECULAR and MULTI-RELIGIOUS state comprising of BOTH Christians and Muslims in equal numbers and that is our strength,” according to Legit.ng.
The former aviation minister also defended the APC’s Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket for 2027, insisting the decision was based solely on the “calibre, ability, sincerity of purpose and electoral strength” of the candidates — not religion. He did not rule out a Christian/Christian ticket in future elections.
