FG to governors: Transport fares must drop nationwide from October 1

President Bola Tinubu has directed all 36 state governors to accelerate implementation of the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme, to ensure Nigerians begin seeing measurable reductions in transport fares from October 1.

According to a report by Tribune Online, the President, in a statement on Saturday, referenced his August 27 meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), where both sides agreed to cut transport costs using domestic alternative energy. An implementation committee, chaired by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has since been set up.

Rejecting calls to restore petrol subsidy amid global energy disruptions, Tinubu said Nigeria cannot control crude prices but can insulate itself through domestic gas. He noted his administration has built a CNG ecosystem featuring over 120,000 converted vehicles, 400 conversion centres and 90 refuelling stations nationwide, citing states already recording fare cuts of 30 to 83 percent.

He urged governors to work with transport unions, expand infrastructure and monitor operators to ensure savings reach commuters.
