Foden scores first career Champions League hat-trick as Man City thrash AEK Athens
Phil Foden scored his first career Champions League hat-trick as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a commanding 5-1 victory over AEK Athens on Tuesday. According to Hayters, City responded impressively to their previous 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, producing a dominant performance to strengthen their European campaign.
Elliot Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute, converting the rebound after Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick struck the crossbar. Foden doubled City’s advantage before half-time following a combination with Rico Lewis, continuing his promising return after a month-long absence.
AEK briefly threatened after the restart when left-back Stavros Pilios fired home, but Rayan Cherki restored City’s two-goal cushion five minutes later after Foden created the opportunity. The England international then completed his hat-trick, first producing a superb finish into the top corner following another Lewis assist before tapping home Ryan McAidoo’s pass.
The emphatic victory offered welcome relief for Enzo Maresca’s side following recent difficulties, while Foden’s performance provided encouragement after his injury lay-off. Maresca has consistently called for the midfielder to rediscover his best form, and Tuesday’s display represented a significant step forward.
