Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday found dead in London days after plagiarism row resignation
Jason Arday, 41, the former Cambridge University Professor of Sociology of Education celebrated as the youngest Black person ever appointed to a Cambridge professorship, has been found dead at an address in Battersea, south London — nine days after resigning amid plagiarism allegations and questions about his academic career.
As reported by PM News, the Metropolitan Police said Arday was found unresponsive on Friday at approximately 3:12pm. The death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious. A coroner’s report is being prepared.
Arday’s rise had been widely celebrated. Born in south London to Ghanaian parents and diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay, he reportedly did not speak until age 11 or read and write until 18 — before ultimately joining Cambridge in March 2023 after professorships at Glasgow and Liverpool John Moores universities.
Cambridge had launched an independent review into his appointment following plagiarism allegations he acknowledged but denied were deliberate.
