Francis Duru explains why Yoruba movies dominate cinemas, digital platforms

Nollywood actor Francis Duru has criticised Igbo filmmakers for failing to protect and promote their cultural heritage in cinema, unlike their Yoruba counterparts, according to a report by Punch.

Speaking on the Gbam interview series aired on Yan Content Factory’s YouTube channel, Duru said Yoruba stakeholders organised themselves, mobilised capital and shielded their industry, while Igbo producers pursued short-term profit over long-term structural growth.

He lamented the scarcity of Igbo-heritage films on platforms like Netflix and urged Igbo investors to learn from Yoruba strategies rather than harbour resentment.
