Genetically modified pig kidney functions for record 271 days in US man

A genetically modified pig kidney functioned in a US man for 271 days, setting a record for the longest time a pig kidney has operated in a human body, according to the Punch.

Tim Andrews, 66, received the kidney at Massachusetts General Hospital in January 2025 after developing end-stage kidney disease linked to type 2 diabetes. The transplant freed him from dialysis while he awaited a human donor.

The kidney initially worked immediately, but doctors removed it in October after blood-vessel damage, inflammation and eventual failure. Andrews subsequently spent 82 days on dialysis before receiving a human kidney in January 2026.

Researchers said the pig had undergone genetic modifications to improve compatibility and reduce immune rejection. They said xenotransplantation could offer hope to patients facing the shortage of human donor organs.
