Ghana backtracks on rule limiting travellers to two phones

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has clarified that air travellers carrying more than two mobile phones into the country will not automatically face customs duty, according to a report by Peoples Gazette.

The clarification follows backlash over comments by customs commissioner Aaron Kanor, who suggested only one personal phone and one belonging to a family member or friend would be exempt, with others treated as commercial imports.

The GRA said officers assess each case individually, considering factors like item quantity, packaging, and whether devices show signs of resale intent. The authority stressed travellers can legitimately carry multiple phones for personal or work use without automatic commercial classification or import duty penalties.
