Haaland’s controversial goal earns ten-man Man City win over United

Manchester City claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the 199th Manchester derby despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men at Old Trafford.

Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal for City, with his effort surviving a VAR review before being allowed to stand. The Norwegian’s strike ultimately separated the sides and secured the visitors a hard-fought Premier League victory.

City had been reduced to 10 men midway through the first half when Phil Foden was shown a red card for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The dismissal left City facing the difficult task of navigating most of the derby with a numerical disadvantage.

Despite United having the extra player, City managed to protect their advantage and leave Old Trafford with all three points. Haaland’s goal proved decisive in a match dominated by the major incidents involving him and Foden.

The result gave City the bragging rights in the latest meeting between the Manchester rivals, while United were left frustrated after failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Haaland again emerged as City’s match-winner, but the decision to allow his goal following the VAR check is likely to remain one of the major talking points from the derby.

For City, the victory was particularly significant because of the circumstances surrounding it. Playing away from home and with 10 men for much of the contest, they held firm to secure a narrow but memorable derby triumph in Sunday’s league clash.
