‘He has everything’: Arbeloa eyes Calvin Bassey as Fulham’s next skipper

Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey could be handed the Fulham captaincy this season after new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa made a glowing and very public declaration of faith in the Super Eagles defender, according to The Punch.

Arbeloa spoke effusively about Bassey during pre-season preparations, saying: “Calvin is a proper player. He has everything. He’s a really funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love Calvin. He can be our leader.”

The comments came after Bassey produced a commanding display as Fulham beat Stuttgart 1-0 in their final pre-season fixture at Craven Cottage, with the Nigerian helping the club keep a clean sheet while operating in Arbeloa’s demanding high defensive line system. Arbeloa said: “I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham. To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything.”

Bassey has established himself as one of Fulham’s most reliable performers since joining from Ajax in 2023, winning the club’s Player of the Season award and passing 100 appearances for the Cottagers. He is being considered alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno as part of the experienced core Arbeloa expects to guide a younger Fulham squad.
