I’ll never drink ‘Monkey Tail’ again if God saves me– Survivor of Ondo herbal drink tragedy
More than 30 people have died and over 50 others are hospitalised following the consumption of adulterated locally made alcoholic drinks across Odigbo, Newtown, Orita and Araromi-Obu communities in Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area, as a suspect alleged to have sold the toxic drink has been arrested and handed to police in Akure.
According to Vanguard, a 32-year-old survivor, Shola Adebayo, lost his sight after drinking two shots of “Monkey Tail.” “If God saves me, I swear I will never take any drinks again. Even beer, I won’t take,” he said from hospital.
Odigbo LGA Chairman Adegoroye Taiwo confirmed the fatalities were linked to unapproved local spirits including ogogoro and ethanol, while NAFDAC and WHO officials have been deployed to assist investigations. The council has banned all locally made alcohol sales.
