Iran Foreign Minister faces impeachment over meeting with Trump envoy
An impeachment motion has been filed against Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, over his contacts with US officials during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to reports, Tehran lawmaker Amirhossein Sabeti submitted the motion, citing Araghchi’s interaction with US envoy Steve Witkoff and other American officials.
Sabeti reportedly argued that the engagement was not authorised by Iran’s Supreme Leader and fell outside the country’s established policy framework.
The move comes after Iranian state media said Araghchi met Witkoff at the US envoy’s request to convey Tehran’s conditions concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The impeachment request is expected to be forwarded to the relevant parliamentary leadership for further consideration.
