King Charles won’t meet Jamaican officials over £7.6bn slavery reparations
King Charles III will not personally receive a petition from Jamaica’s government demanding £7.6 billion in slavery reparations, despite a delegation travelling to London with the formal document for Buckingham Palace.
According to a Daily Mail report, the King is at Balmoral and the Palace said in-person receipt was “not the correct process,” directing the petition instead to the Privy Council’s Judicial Committee. Jamaican culture minister Olivia Grange said the petition asks whether Britain has a legal duty to provide redress for slavery.
The Foreign Office will instead hold bilateral talks with the delegation, while Prime Minister Andrew Holness has separately signalled plans to sever ties with the British crown.
