Lagos court jails 53-year-old woman for dumping refuse in drain
A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State, according to The Punch.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, for dumping refuse in the drain during rainfall. She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty and was convicted. LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, describing such acts as environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law.
The authority said it would continue working with enforcement agencies to identify and sanction offenders, urging residents to dispose of waste through approved channels.
