Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that the state faces a deficit of approximately 40,000 doctors and 40,000 nurses, with a funding shortfall of at least N100 billion above current budgetary provisions needed to adequately serve its rapidly growing population.

Speaking at the second Eko Health Convention at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Sanwo-Olu warned that shrinking donor financing for disease control was compounding the crisis. “Every doctor in Lagos today is, in effect, doing the work of ten,” he said.

The Punch reports that despite the challenges, the governor said aggressive recruitment was underway across 29 secondary healthcare facilities, while over 1.5 million residents had enrolled in the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme.
