Lakewood megachurch nearly empty under Joel Osteen’s leadership
Houston’s Lakewood Church, led by Joel and Victoria Osteen, is facing scrutiny after Protestia reported that a video filmed by an Instagram user during the August 9 Sunday service showed the 16,800-seat sanctuary less than 25% full.
According to Protestia, this contrasts sharply with the church’s 2024 survey claim of 45,000 weekly attendees, a figure that would require near-capacity crowds across all four services. The outlet also alleged that Lakewood’s livestream uses camera angles and dim lighting to make the sanctuary appear fuller than in-person accounts suggest.
