Largest ever: How Ukraine sent 1,000 drones to Russia in a single overnight attack

Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia overnight, including hundreds aimed at Moscow, in what the Russian capital’s mayor described as its largest-ever drone attack.

According to CBS News, citing Russian and Ukrainian officials, the assault came as Russia concluded the final day of parliamentary elections. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the strikes damaged an oil refinery and a residential building.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces shot down 1,110 Ukrainian drones across the country, Crimea and the Black Sea. Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said two people, a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, were killed, while 20 others were wounded.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv deployed drones as well as domestically produced Flamingo and Pelican missiles, targeting Russian oil and logistics facilities. He said the strikes were intended to increase financial pressure on Moscow’s war effort.

The attack came amid continuing Russian strikes on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone strike hit a monastery in the Kherson region, killing a member of the clergy and injuring four people.

Authorities also said a Russian attack on Kyiv killed a mother and two children on Saturday evening. Another child injured in the same strike later died in hospital on Sunday.

The latest exchange underscores the growing use of long-range drones and missiles by both sides as the war continues, with energy facilities and other infrastructure increasingly becoming targets.
