Lyon receive €4.6m UEFA windfall despite Champions League play-off exit
Olympique Lyon have received a multi-million-euro financial boost from UEFA despite failing to qualify for the 2026/27 Champions League league phase following their play-off defeat to Fenerbahce. According to GOAL, citing reports from Sportune, UEFA processed a solidarity payment to the French club on September 17 to compensate for their elimination at the final qualifying stage.
Under UEFA’s financial distribution model, clubs eliminated in the Champions League play-offs are guaranteed €4.29 million, although reports suggest Lyon’s total compensation could reach approximately €4.6 million. The payment, however, pales in comparison with the €18.62 million participation bonus guaranteed to clubs reaching the competition’s league phase, excluding performance-related bonuses and commercial revenue.
Lyon, managed by Paulo Fonseca, had progressed past Sparta Prague in the preliminary rounds before falling short against Fenerbahce. The financial injection comes as the club continues to operate under the scrutiny of France’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, with player sales playing an important role in meeting regulatory requirements. Lyon have since turned their attention to the Europa League.
