More voters identifying as Democrats, shying away from Republican label

More US voters are now identifying as Democrats while distancing themselves from the Republican label, according to the latest quarterly data published by Gallup, as reported by The Guardian.

The data showed 49% of voters surveyed leaned Democrat, including independents asked to pick a party, while only 39% leaned Republican. The 10-point spread marks a sharp reversal from the four-point Republican advantage recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, when Donald Trump won re-election and Republicans swept Congress.

The report noted this is Democrats’ most sizable advantage since 2008. It comes as Trump’s approval rating has slid from 52% at his January 2025 inauguration to 38%, with 58% of voters now disapproving of his performance, following federal workforce cuts, tariffs, a costly spending bill and the Iran conflict.
