MURIC threatens protest, demands suspension of Law School exams over hijab ban
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded the suspension of examinations across Nigerian Law School campuses following alleged harassment of female Muslim students wearing hijab.
According to Daily Trust, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the demand in a statement on Sunday. Trust Radio
He alleged that some candidates were prevented from entering examination halls on October 31 until they removed their hijabs.
“Hijabites who came hoping to sit for their call-to-bar final examinations were disallowed from entering the examination halls. In some places, they were forced to remain standing outside for about one hour until they removed their hijabs before they were allowed to enter and start the examination.”
Akintola described the alleged incidents as violations of constitutional rights, citing provisions protecting religious freedom and human dignity.
The organisation demanded an investigation and threatened peaceful protests if its concerns remained unresolved.
The Nigerian Law School had not responded to the allegations.
