Mystery surrounds death of Nigerian lecturer at South Africa residence

A Nigerian lecturer at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, has died under unclear circumstances at her residence in Eastern Cape Province, with a family member disclosing that the death was not from natural causes, according to a report by Diaspora Tales.

According to The Punch, Dr Odularu, 51, died on August 16, 2026, but the family sought an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death before making a public announcement. Her brother, Dr Gbadebo Odularu, confirmed the death to Diaspora Tales after a GoFundMe campaign was launched for the family.

“A family member who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed the don’s death was not from natural causes, adding that the circumstances surrounding her death remained unclear,” the report noted.

The University of Fort Hare, where Odularu served as an Independent Senior Researcher, held a memorial service on Thursday, honouring her contributions to academic research, sustainable development and empowerment of underserved communities.

“Her work reflected a deep commitment to addressing challenges that affect everyday lives, including access to knowledge, educational opportunity, sustainable development, and solutions that empower underserved communities,” the GoFundMe statement read.

The circumstances surrounding her death and the status of any investigation had not been officially confirmed at press time. Her death comes amid heightened concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks.
