A young graduate sparked backlash after addressing United Bank for Africa Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, by his first name during an interactive session at the bank’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme graduation ceremony in Lagos on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, which honoured 374 graduates, the lady greeted him, “Good morning, Tony,” prompting Elumelu to correct her, insisting he be addressed as “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE,” not “Tony” or “Oyinbo life.”
According to The Gazette, the exchange has since triggered mixed reactions online, with many faulting her for disrespect and others defending her as simply professional.
