New York mother says straight-A son cannot do basic fractions, algebra
A New York City parent leader says the public school system gave her son top math grades although he cannot handle basic fractions or algebra.
Adriana Aviles, a former NYPD officer and member of the Citywide Council on High Schools, wrote in the New York Post that her 14-year-old son received A’s through elementary and middle school, with his lowest math grade an 89. After he scored 78 on his first exam at a top Queens high school, she sat down to help him review for the next test. He could answer only a few questions and later scored 10 out of 100.
Aviles said she later learned he was deemed “not proficient” in math on a seventh-grade state exam. “I feel deceived,” she said.
She confronted Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels at a town hall on Monday, October 26. “This school system is failing our children,” she said. Aviles said Samuels did not answer her question about the planned “Portrait of a Graduate” model.
