‘Next Drogba’ leaves Chelsea with rare transfer loss
David Datro Fofana is set to leave Chelsea for Swiss club Servette in a deal worth an initial €2.5 million, marking a rare transfer loss for a club renowned for generating substantial income from player sales. According to HF World, Fofana joined Chelsea from Molde for about £10.6 million in January 2023 and was once viewed as a potential successor to fellow Ivorian legend Didier Drogba.
However, he made only four appearances for the Blues before embarking on loan spells with Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg. Chelsea’s ability to turn departures into profit has been a defining feature of their recent transfer strategy, with academy graduates including Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Ian Maatsen among notable lucrative sales. Fofana’s modest fee therefore stands out as an unusual setback for the Stamford Bridge transfer model.
