Nigeria distances itself from failed coup in Niger Republic

The Federal Government has denied any involvement in the failed coup attempt in Niger Republic, according to a report by The Punch. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, in a statement, rejected claims that ECOWAS and Nigeria endorsed the coup, calling them “false and mischievous.”

He insisted Nigeria remains a defender of constitutional order and stability across West Africa and the Sahel, stressing the country would never support unconstitutional government change. Enikanolaiye referenced Nigeria’s earlier official statement of August 30, expressing concern over Niger’s situation and urging peaceful return to democracy. He urged Nigerians to disregard circulating videos, reaffirming commitment to ECOWAS and African Union protocols against illegal power seizures.
