Nigeria emerges top beneficiary as EU commits €2.3m to cholera fight in Africa

The European Union has released €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian funding to Nigeria and three other African countries battling a cholera outbreak, with Nigeria receiving the largest share of €1.5 million. According to ThisDayLive, the funding will support intervention teams, cholera kits, water and sanitation measures, and disease surveillance.

The World Health Organisation reported 61,888 cholera cases and 1,230 deaths across 16 African countries between January and May 2026, with Nigeria recording 6,860 cases and 80 deaths. Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Chad will also benefit from the intervention.
