Nigerians in US remit over $20bn annually — US Consul General
United States Consul General in Lagos Brandon Hudspeth has described the Nigeria-US partnership as having the potential to shape not only America’s relationship with Africa but also global commercial, cultural, political and economic affairs.
Speaking at a reception marking his return to Lagos, as reported by This Day Live, Hudspeth said: “This partnership between the United States and Nigeria will not just shape the future of the U.S. relationship with the continent of Africa, but it also has the power to influence in every manner, commercially, culturally, politically, and economically on a global level.”
The consul general highlighted two-way trade reaching nearly $15 billion annually with over 100 American companies operating in Lagos, while noting that Nigeria’s approximately 750,000-strong US diaspora contributes over $20 billion in annual remittances.
Describing Lagos as a “frontier cultural powerhouse,” Hudspeth cited Nollywood, Afrobeats, fashion and design as globally influential creative industries the consulate would actively support. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for stronger economic ties and greater US market access for Lagos businesses.
