‘Not far enough’: US parents, teens react to Meta’s new youth restrictions
Meta’s new restrictions on teen social media use—part of an $18bn settlement with US states—are welcome but insufficient, parents and teenagers told the BBC. The company will impose a daily two-hour limit, hide like counts, remove autoplay, mute school-hour notifications, and ban extreme filters.
Houston mother Elizabeth Cardner said the changes “will save a few arguments at home” but “doesn’t go far enough.” Massachusetts parent Andria Rose argued Meta is “trying to limit the drug” without “controlling” it. Meta will withhold $5bn pending similar action from YouTube and TikTok, with independent auditors monitoring compliance going forward.
