”No response until Council meets”: MCIU Vice-Chancellor, Ibiyinka Fuwape reacts to Kila’s credential controversy
Following an investigative report by PREMIUM TIMES questioning the academic credentials and professorial title of Pro-Chancellor Anthony Kila, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Prof. Ibiyinka Fuwape, stated that the institution will defer any official response until its Governing Council meets.
The investigation alleged that no recognized academic institution had conferred a professorial rank on Kila, despite his public presentation as a professor and “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development.” Checks across UK Companies House, European Union databases, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate revealed no supporting records or valid academic publications attached to these claims. Kila had cited a UK-based center for his 2016 professorship, but verified institutions denied any record of him.
Addressing the controversy, Prof. Fuwape explained that the matter must first undergo internal review: “We will reply you very soon… The council is yet to meet. I can’t give you any information other than that.” She declined to state a exact timeline for the council’s meeting or public statement.
Kila was appointed MCIU Pro-Chancellor in August 2025, a role where he chairs the Governing Council responsible for overseeing administration, finance, and institutional policy. The university’s upcoming response is expected to clarify whether MCIU independently verified Kila’s credentials prior to his appointment.
