“We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics. The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra,” OpenAI said.

OpenAI says it has solved a 90-year-old mathematics problem in 88 hours using roughly 10,000 AI agents, according to BBC News. The ChatGPT-maker said its new internal model tackled the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, resolving two of four required statements for the Millennium Prize.

However, the claim has sparked controversy after Tristan Buckmaster, a New York University mathematics professor, alleged that information about his and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge’s concurrent work reached OpenAI before its announcement.

OpenAI denied accessing their work, calling the timing coincidental, though it acknowledged de-identified usage data “cannot be ruled out” as a factor. The company said its proof remains unverified by the Clay Mathematics Institute and it does not intend to claim the $1m prize.
